Mother Tongue Fortnight 2026: Celebrating Culture and Heritage

From 2 to 13 March 2026, Regent Secondary School hosted its annual Mother Tongue Fortnight, offering students meaningful opportunities to explore and appreciate the richness of their Mother Tongue languages and cultures.

Across the two weeks, students engaged in a thoughtfully curated range of hands-on activities designed to deepen their cultural understanding. Secondary 1 students were introduced to puppetry arts through Chinese shadow puppetry and traditional Malay Wayang Kulit, bringing storytelling traditions to life and sparking curiosity about cultural heritage.

Building on this, Secondary 2 students explored traditional writing systems such as the Chinese Oracle script, Khat drawing and Jawi calligraphy, gaining insight into the history and artistry of written forms across cultures. Secondary 3 students then experienced traditional martial arts, including Wushu and Silat Pengantin, where they learnt about the discipline, control and respect embedded in these practices.

Meanwhile, our Secondary 4 students expressed their creativity through cultural crafts such as Chinese fan painting and the making of Bunga Manggar and Bunga Rampai. These hands-on activities allowed them to connect with tradition in a personal and meaningful way. Throughout the programme, instructors enriched students’ learning by sharing insights into the historical and cultural significance of each activity, making the experience both engaging and memorable.

Mother Tongue Fortnight continues to strengthen students’ appreciation of their cultural roots while fostering respect for diversity, empowering them to grow as confident individuals in an increasingly interconnected world.
